When I was three years old I had Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease in my left hip. My left hip was rebuilt when I was five. After two years of sporadic pain and difficulties walking my left hip failed on October 14th 2006. This is my blog of the journey I am going through to re-gain my health and again establish a normal, stable and healthy adult life.

I have had urgent surgery ...

Monday October 1st, 2007

Between July and August 2007 the pain in my left hip (the one which had legg perthes) approximately doubled. The surgeons office had stated it would be the fall of 2008 before I would be able to have corrective surgery. I faxed the surgeon and requested urgent surgery describing the increase in pain.

My hip was rebuild September 17th 2007. The surgeon took the ball from a mushroom shape (what the surgeon from when I was a child did for me) to make my hip look almost like a normal hip. He used a piece of bone from one area of my hip where it shouldn't have been and did a bone graft. While my hip was apart he carved the hip so it wouldn't continue to catch on the cartilage.

Today is October 1st. I have 2 more weeks of healing for the bone graft and then I start physiotherapy.

My energy is really low. A full day's activity is 3 hours right now. With crutches I am able to walk 100 feet including 24 stairs up and down per day.

My incision was about 16", 24 staples held it closed. I am staying with a friend post surgery. They rent to a nurse who works at the same hospital which operated on me. He has been doing all my home care. Today he took out 12 of the 24 staples. Tomorrow he is going to remove the remaining 12 staples.

I should be back to work at the start of December. My employment is at call center. I also have a Christian ministry on the Internet I have been putting time into. It is my long term goal to turn it into my career.

I have had a lot of quiet time post surgery. It has done me good. It really took my energy having my hip operated on.

If you are in the Ottawa, Ontario, Canada area the surgeon who did my hip has his web site at: www.conservativehipsolutions.com/ This is a good resource for anyone, I would recommend the surgeon. He is very good at what he does. He is the head of the department at the hospital.

My only concern was that I would need to be circumcised if a catheter was required. I didn't want to loose my foreskin. The nurse was able to retract it so I could have a catheter.
