Having been in and out of countless medical facilities and numerous hospitals I have heard many people talk about their experiences. With the growth of the Internet numerous websites exist to share and rate your health care professional. These points to consider are in defence of health care workers.

  • The results of trauma surgeries (such as surgery following a serious car accident) aren't necessarily going to be the same as elective surgery.

  • Past hurt by doctor doesn't mean every doctor is going to hurt you.

  • Specific instructions and restrictions are given to follow during the healing process following an operation. These are based on a surgeons experience in the hopes of providing you with the best possibility outcome. For someone to say a particular surgeon is poor when they didn't follow these instructions isn't an accurate summary of the situation.

  • Putting your guard up may keep you from receiving help you would benefit from.

  • A surgeon isn't a close friend. Emotional support should be sought from peers and when necessary those with appropriate training.

  • A positive experience for having surgery relies on allowing others to help you.

  • The perception of a surgeon, nurses and support staff while hospitalized following a procedure may not reflect reality. The strong medications used post surgery (such as for pain control) influence a person's ability to assess a situation.

  • Taking ownership of health challenges is an open door for those in the health care community to walk you through to wholeness and healing. Refusing treatment or delaying a procedure may limit the success you will experience.

  • The relationship between a doctor and patient is classified. People sharing their experience may not provide full disclosure.

  • Post surgery results vary on an individual level. All of our bodies are made different.

  • Many times physiotherapy is essential to recovering from an operation. If the regime isn't followed as directed and concerns addressed in a timely fashion the success of a procedure may be compromised and isn't the reflection of a surgeon's skill set.
