After corrective surgery to my left hip at five years old I was able to live life free of handicapped challenges until I was 29 years old when my childhood surgery reached it's life expectancy. The information I have prepared below is to help you manage your life living it to the fullest.

From your experience if you have suggestions for content please take time to contact me. I have these web pages online so individuals with physical challenges won't struggle with situational depression or become bitter, but instead may live a full and meaningful life.

Tips

When out shopping don't be afraid to ask for help. I have found with the stores I shop at that the staff are willing to assist when I have needed help reaching or locating a product.

Don't be ashamed to use a mobility aid. Tools such as a wheelchair, walker, cane and crutches are to help get around. There isn't shame in using these. By acknowledging your need for these your quality and enjoyment of life will increase.

Pain is dibilitating. Working closely with doctors for pain management is worth the effort. Chronic pain may lead to bitterness and suck the joy from life. It is possible to live a focused life through pain management.

Traveling and Transporation

Plan before you leave There are a number of things to think through before traveling out of town including medication needs, ensuring your mode(s) of transportation are compatible with your physical challenges, a contingency plan for the effects of adverse weather and a printed copy of your route with contact details for where you are traveling to.

Is a personal attendent needed for your journey? Does your care plan normally involve a personal support worker? Would you be more comfortable if someone travelled with you? Many transportation companies allow an attendant to travel without charge if a doctors note stipulates your need for care. Ask about this while deciding on how you will travel.

Plan ahead for your dietary needs. If you have food allergies let your dietary needs be known. As well ask before you eat to avoid an allergic reaction.

Noteworthy Recommendations

VIA Rail Canada has been and continues to be a wonderful company to travel with. The city where I live has a staffed station. There is a special platform which is used to raise my electric wheelchair to the height of a train so I may simply drive onto the car equipped with tie downs for my wheelchair.

If medically warranted an attendant may travel with the person who has physical challenges at no additional charge. A doctors note is required as proof assistance with toileting, feeding or medication management is necessary.

VIA Rail Canada customer care on the phone or the local station is where the ticket must be booked to request the handicap accessible services. The on train staff have consistently been very professional and compassionate to me in making my travelling enjoyable.
