Plans For My Initial Series Of Outpatient Appointments
[ Wednesday April 29th 2026 at 11:36 am ]

I had my morning inpatient physiotherapy. Part way down the hall a patient was being transferred from a lift onto a stretcher then off to surgery. I stood for the 4 minutes the transfer took place. Then I finished walking all the way to the end of the hall. I took a 5 minute sitting break. After this I walked all the back to my room.

The focus for today was building on improving my gait. (in common language: The mechanics of forming a step.) We are trying to get more motion out of my knee. I found this very hard. Although I am not saying this for you to feel sorry for me. This is part of the package deal when a knee joint is replaced.

The physiotherapist talked to me about going home tomorrow. My nurse for today has talked to me about going home tomorrow. The orthopedic surgeon has left a note on my patient charge that I am to be discharged tomorrow. I asked my surgeon to have time to build up my endurance in case the diarrhea returns like on April 22nd 2026. The hospital has honored this. They have done what is reasonably possible for me. It is getting to be time to move on to the next phase of my recovery.

For when I arrive home I have about 14 exercises to do while laying on my bed. Most of these exercises are to increase the motion in my knee. As I have been going on walks with the physiotherapist and mobility team members they have been coaching me on the process to get my right knee joint moving. They have also been very encouraging and supporting.

On May 11th 2026 I have my first outpatient physiotherapy appointment at 10:30AM. Since this is 17 days post surgery I also have lined up an appointment in the afternoon with my family doctor to take a look at my incision. The intention is for me to be cleared to begin using the warm water therapy pool. I have booked the para transit vehicle to take me to the warm water therapy pool the following day.

This hasn't been easy. But life is good.
